Standing-seam metal sheds snow and resists ice-dam damage. Whatever the surface, the assembly matters more: ice-and-water shield well past the interior wall line, balanced intake and exhaust ventilation, and generous insulation are what actually stop ice dams.

Look for shingles rated to at least 130 mph with enhanced nailing patterns, stainless or hot-dip galvanised fasteners, and sealed ridge and hip details.
